Dr. Stephanie Taylor Nominated for Prestigious CDC Award

Dr. Stephanie N. Taylor, Professor of Medicine and Interim Senor Associate Dean for Faculty and Institutional Affairs co-authored a paper nominated for a CDC Charles C. Shepard Science Award. Dr. Taylor also serves as Medical Director of the LA Office of Public Health STD/HIV/Hepatitis Program and lead author is Dr. Mohammad M. Rahman, the CDC assignee to the program. These awards recognize excellence in scientific achievement by CDC authors of outstanding scientific papers in the previous year and honor the memory of Charles C. Shepard, a renowned microbiologist.

The awards were described during the ceremony as the “CDC Scientific Community ‘Oscar Awards.’” In 2023, 2,977 CDC publications were published in 743 journals. Of the 2,977 publications, Dr. Taylor’s paper was one of only 48 papers nominated in five categories. In the Prevention and Control Category, seven papers were nominated.
The 2023 Prevention and Control award was presented to authors of the landmark Mpox vaccine paper that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Although Dr. Taylor’s paper did not win the award, it is a tremendous honor to be nominated.
