Internal Medicine

Dr. Allison Augustus-Wallace recently published two articles. The first paper was an editorial published in the BMJ (British Medical Journal) titled “Sense of belonging is a critical component of workforce retention.” “Equitable hiring strategies for a diversified faculty” was published online by ASBMB Today (the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) and is a review of a recently published paper in Nature Biomedical Engineering.

Dr. Annalisa Perez (Nephrology) and Dr. Efrain Reisin (Nephrology) recently published Hyperuricemia: An Intriguing Connection to Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes, Kidney Disease, and Hypertension in Current Hypertension Reports this review paper on the epidemiology, physiology, and clinical data surrounding the connection between hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, and hypertension.

Dr. Mihran Naljayan (Nephrology) recently published a piece in the DaVita Newsroom titled “Who Will Inspire the Next Generation of Nephrologists?

Emergency Medicine colleagues including Dr. Kasha Bornstein (IM/ EM Resident), Dr. Elizabeth LaRosa (EM Resident), Dr. Kelsey Byrd (EM Resident) and Dr. Heather Murphy-Lavoie (Emergency Medicine) recently published When Educational Images Don't Reflect the Population: Phlegmasia Cerulea Dolens, a Case Report in Clinical Practice and Cases in Emergency Medicine. The team described a case of Phlegmasia Cerulea Dolens in a patient with a darker skin complexion and highlighted distinctions in exam findings in patients of color.

Dr. Omar Leonards (Cardiology Fellow) recently published the online editorial titled PAD: A Clue to Polyvascular Disease in Need of Federal Legislative Reconsideration in the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Paul Harch (Emergency Medicine) recently published Review of Hyperbaric Therapy and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in the Treatment of Neurological Disorders According to Dose of Pressure and Hyperoxia in the Frontiers in Neurology and is also the Guest Editor of a Research Topic in Frontiers in Neurology, Experimental Therapeutics and Neurotrauma.

Dr. Ben Springgate and team’s work with the Community Resilience Learning Collaborative and Research Network (Section of Community and Population Medicine, including Dr. Ashley Wennerstrom and Dr. Richard Culbertson) resulted in a book chapter entitled "Community Partnered Participatory Research in Southeast Louisiana Communities Threatened by Climate Change: The C-LEARN EXPERIENCE" being published this month in Challenging Cases in Clinical Research Ethics (Taylor and Francis, Oxford, England).
