The department recently held its Medical Research Day. Several residents and fellows won awards, including:
Oral Presentations:

  • Hope Oddo (Fellow) for Rapid Re-Entry into Care: A Trainee Initiative
  • Lily Chen (Resident) for A Case of Coccidiomycosis Confounding a Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Diagnosis  
  • Asad Mussarat (Resident) for Paraneoplastic Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis: Mystery with an Ovarian Teratoma Twist   

Poster Presentations:

  • Danielle Gilbert (Fellow) for Claudication or Something More Sinister: A Case of Endovascular Infection Due to Campylobacter Coli

Dr. Omar Reynolds (Cardiology Fellow) recently published a perspective entitled “Medicare Reimbursement and Inflation: A Perfect Storm That Threatens Medicare Beneficiaries’ Access to Care” for the American College of Cardiology in which he discussed the negative impact of the proposed 2.8% cuts to the 2025 Medicare PFS.  

Pathology
Dr. FerozeDr. Asra Feroze accepted a Gynecologic Pathology Fellowship 
at Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

 at Yale University.

Physiology
Fitzpatrick-Schmidt receives awardTaylor Fitzpatrick-Schmidt received the 2024 Michael G. Levitzky Outstanding Teaching Award from the department.


Fitzpatrick-Schmidt and Meagan Donovan represented the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Center of Excellence at Xavier Recovery Day in September by sharing information, distributing fentanyl test kits, building collaborative networks, and recruiting future trainees.

 

Zaidmara Diaz, MD/MPH Candidate and student worker in Physiology made her debut at National Hispanic Society Network (NHSN) Annual Meeting with her oral presentation "Differential Effect of Chronic Binge Alcohol Administration on Glycolytic Enzymes in Skeletal Muscle of SIV-Infected Female Macaques." The same was presented as a poster. 

Xavier R. Chapa-Dubocq, PhD, presented “Post Traumatic Brain Injury Alcohol Accentuates Neurobehavioral Outcomes; Potential Role of Altered Bioenergetics in the Prefrontal Cortex” at NHSN. The same was presented as a poster.

Eden Gallegos, MD/PhD student, presented a poster “The risk of liver steatosis based on dietary patterns, alcohol use, and race: a 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey” at NHSN. 

Keishla M. Rodríguez-Graciani, PhD, won best basic sciences award for her poster presentation at NHSN “Alcohol-Induced Impairment of Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Bioenergetics: implication of SIRT1 Regulation.”

Radiology
PGY-4 resident Dr. Claire Holmes’ abstract “CHANTER Syndrome: cerebellar, hippocampal, and basal nuclei transient edema with restricted diffusion” was accepted as an electronic interesting case exhibit at the Southeastern Neuroradiological Society scheduled for October 2024 but cancelled due to hurricane damage.

PGY-5 resident Dr. Colin Rutner also had an accepted abstract, "Calcified Chondroid Mesenchymal Neoplasm of the TMJ” selected as an electronic interesting case exhibit at the same conference.
