SNMA Holds Annual Convention
The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) hosted its 60th Annual Medical Education
Convention (AMEC) themed "From Pressure to Purpose: Illuminating the Path to Excellence,”
in New Orleans, LA, from March 27th through the 30th, 2024, at the Earnest E. Morial
Convention Center.
Nearly 4,000 medical students from around the country convened to participate in the scholarly exchange of medical advances, professional development, and advances in health policy this year. The School of Medicine was extensively represented as a participant in and sponsor of convention programs.
The School’s Office of Diversity & Community Engagement partnered with the SNMA Pipeline
Mentoring and MAPS Chapter sections to host Premedical Pathway Programs for Edna Karr
High School students and visiting undergraduate students on campus at the Center for
Advanced Learning & Simulation (CALS) and Lions Center for Advanced Practice simulation
lab.
LSU SNMA Chapter students, LSU residents with the House Staff Association, ODCE Outreach Director Geri Davis, Learning & Simulation Director Daryl Lofaso and Associate Deans Drs. Mclean and Maupin all facilitated student engagement.
Throughout the convention, and with support from the Dean’s Office, the Office of
Academic Affairs and the ODCE led a team of faculty and residents representing a range
of GME programs/departments with student outreach at the LSU School of Medicine recruitment
booth in the AMEC Professional Exhibitor Hall. GME faculty, program directors and
residents were able to connect with hundreds of students from around the country to
share the value and opportunities for GME training with our LSU affiliated programs.
A number of LSUHSC faculty participated as featured speakers and panelists during
educational forums throughout the AMEC convention, including but not 
limited to Drs. Deteige with Emergency Medicine, Miranda Mitchell with Internal Medicine
Baton Rouge, Chris Marrero with Orthopaedic Medicine, and Robert Maupin with LSU OB/GYN
New Orleans (pictured, left, with Dr. Yoland Lawson, 124th President of the National Medical Association
(NMA)), all of whom work with the SOM ODCE. It was a privilege for the School of Medicine
to serve as partner and stakeholder with the national SNMA organization. The School
of Medicine is grateful for the tireless efforts of students and faculty as ambassadors
throughout the convention.
