Faculty and graduate students from the departments of Physiology, Genetics, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Immunology & Parasitology, Cell Biology & Anatomy, and the Dean's Office of Diversity & Community Engagement participated in the Association for Women in Science-Southern Louisiana Chapter’s (AWIS-SL) science exhibit at the 8th Annual Girl Scouts Louisiana East Believe in Girls (B.I.G.) Event held on Saturday, September 23, 2023. (Image, right: Wema Kibanga demonstrates how to pipette to young Girl Scouts)
This hands-on, in-person event is an exciting and engaging day filled with opportunities to learn about STEM, life skills, entrepreneurship and outdoor skills from organizations hosting exhibits and presentations. Over 1,000 Girl Scouts visited exhibits held throughout the Southern University of New Orleans campus. The AWIS-SL exhibit included the stations: Dress Like a Scientist, Learn to Pipette, Make a Neuron Using Colored Pipe Cleaners, and View the Human Brain and Heart. It was a fun day of supporting women and girls in science. (Image, left: Margaret Larsen demonstrates a human heart and lung to a Girl Scout. Image, below: Dress Like a Scientist and Table Set Up)
