Internal Medicine:
Dr. Cynthia Brown recently published two manuscripts focused on hospital associated disability. Up to 30% of older adults leave the hospital with a decline in the ability to complete their activities of daily living when compared to before admission. This proportion has been unchanged for three decades, despite significant changes in how healthcare is provided:
- Hospital-associated disability due to avoidable hospitalizations among older adults Rachel M Skains, Yue Zhang, John D Osborne, Tobias O'Leary, Mackenzie E Fowler, Alayne Markland, Thomas W Buford, Cynthia J Brown, Richard E Kennedy
- Delirium Mediates Incidence of Hospital-Associated Disability Among Older Adults Hyun Freeman, Roy C Martin, Caroline Whittington, Yue Zhang, John D Osborne, Tobias O'Leary, Jasmine K Vickers, Kellie L Flood, Rachel M Skains, Alayne D Markland, Thomas W Buford, Cynthia J Brown, Richard E Kennedy
Dr. Christine Butts (Emergency Medicine), Dr. Ben DeBoisblanc, Dr. Stephen Kantrow and Dr. Matt Lammi (Pulmonary/ Critical Care) recently published in American Thoracic Society (ATS) Scholar on a longitudinal ultrasound curriculum.
Dr. Paul Harch (Emergency Medicine) was invited to guest edit a special research topic in Frontiers in Neurology, titled Review of Hyperbaric Therapy & Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in the Treatment of Neurological Disorders. The focus of these articles will be a review of the literature on hyperbaric therapy/hyperbaric oxygen therapy for acute to chronic neurological disorders according to the dose of oxygen, pressure, and "inert” breathing gases employed.
Dr. Paul LeLorier (Cardiology) recently published with LSU neurology colleagues on Change in sudomotor function (autonomic nervous system control of sweat gland activity) after COVID-19 infection. These findings were reported in eNeurologicalSci, a Journal of the World Federation of Neurology. (Aditi Varma-Doyle, Nicole R Villemarette-Pittman, Paul Lelorier, John England)
Dr. Mihran Naljayan (Nephrology) recently published a paper on the Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lessons learned regarding home dialysis. The authors found the clinical benefits seen in home over center-based dialysis treatment were more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, but increased utilization of home dialysis did not occur. (Naljayan, Mihran V.; Schiller, Brigitte; Watnick, Suzanne; Weinhandl, Eric D.; Perl, Jeffrey)
