Resident Dr. Victoria Patton was recently selected by the Gold Humanism Honor Society as the Resident of the Semester for the Fall of 2022 for her noteworthy interactions with peers, patients, and the community. Representatives from the honor society noted that she embodies the GHHS pillars of respect, integrity, service, and empathy.
Dr. Jordan Vaughn (EM PGY 4) has been accepted into the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA) and American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Health Policy Academy. This is a highly selective year-long academy that trains attendees to be policy advocates in Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Apre M. Dixon-Gleaves (EMED resident) was selected by University Medical Center as the Resident of the Quarter (fourth quarter, 2022) for dedication to compassion, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
Emergency Medicine residents and faculty raised $1,300 for the Spirit of Charity Foundation Women's Reproductive Health Fund. This donation was made in the name of LSU EM and directly benefit women in our community.
Dr. Sara Anderson (Med-Peds resident) was acknowledged for going above and beyond to make a patient with a prolonged hospitalization feel comfortable, even bringing him Honduran food.
Dr. Nabeel Saghir (Cardiology Fellow) presented at the Louisiana American Cardiology College (ACC) Chapter meeting.
Dr. Aline Zaparte, a postdoc in Pulmonary and ADACE, has being awarded a LAUNCHED Pilot and Feasibility Grant, funded by the NIDDK/NIH.
Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology
Graduate student Caleb Ardizzone has been selected for an oral presentation of his work entitled “Bacterial vaginosis
vaginosis-mediated modulation of humoral immunity to Chlamydia trachomatis” at the
Biennial Meeting of the Chlamydia Basic Research Society to be held in Omaha, Nebraska
in March, 2023.
Ophthalmology
PGY3 Dr. John Thompson co-authored, together with Associate Professor Dr. Kirchner, Wernicke's Encephalopathy
from Gastrointestinal Disease After Remote Roux-en-Y in the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology.
Dr. Christine Connolly, Dr. Chris Lasecki (PGY4 & Co-Chief), and Dr. Harsh Chawla (PGY3) recently conducted a free eye screening clinic at Lakeside Mall.

The department congratulates 2023 Chief Residents Dr. Maryam Sadough and Dr. Wenjing Qiu, along with thanks to outgoing chiefs, Dr. Jack Harbert and Dr. Fernanda da Silva Lameira, for their commitment to the residents and the program.
Dr. Zaid Khreefa’s “Pathogenesis and Mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in the Intestine, Liver, and Pancreas” has been published in the eminent journal, Cells. It was also selected as the issue cover. Dr. Gordon Love and Dr. Luis Del Valle provided support and guidance on this project.
Pediatrics
The residency leadership team congratulates future Chief Residents of the Pediatric
Residency Program (2024 - 2025 Academic Year): Drs. Karleigh Barkemeyer and Mandy Granier.
Barkemeyer (photo, left) is a graduate of LSU Health Sciences Center - Shreveport and Granier (photo, right) is a graduate of LSU Health Sciences Center - New Orleans. Both have demonstrated strong clinical abilities, leadership skills, and a commitment to the success of the residency program. The Chief Residents are an integral part of residency leadership team - responsible for program administration, resident education, recruitment efforts, and much more.

- Endocrinology matched LSU Pediatrics Resident Brantlee McConaughey.
- Neonatology matched Mike Evers who graduated from our LSU Pediatrics Residency Program earlier this year.
- Pediatric Hospital Medicine will welcome two fellows in 2023, our own Pediatric Resident Kayla Griese and Aamna Hafeez of the Michigan State University Pediatric Residency Program.
- Hematology/Oncology matched Casey Treuting from the University of Mississippi Pediatric Residency Program, where he is serving as a fourth-year chief resident.
- Gastroenterology matched Kyle Glisson from our own Pediatrics Residency Program.
Surgery
Celeste Gary, MD, presented “Rhinoplasty Basics and Beyond” to Plastic and Reconstructive residents
on December 16, 2022. The objectives of the conference were to understand the relevant
nasal anatomy and nasal analysis for rhinoplasty procedures, distinguish and choose
between rhinoplasty approaches, and gain exposure to available rhinoplasty techniques
and maneuvers for each third of the nose. Dr. Gary presented an outstanding lecture
and question series, and the participants and division leadership were thankful for
her contribution to increasing knowledge and insight for all present. Dr. Dupin‘s leadership and contributions to Plastics Friday conferences keep everyone engaged
and informed.
