SOM AWARDS AND HONORS

Collaborations

Dr. Jerome Volk, MD and Dr. Nihal Godiwala, MD of LSU School of Medicine Departments of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics presented an interactive case discussion following a three-year-old patient with suspected COVID-19 and thrombotic storm from the ER through the full continuum of care in the PICU at the 49th annual meeting of the American Association of Neurologic Surgery (virtual) convention.

Noelle Moreau, PhD, PT, Associate Professor, Departments of Physical Therapy and Cell Biology and Anatomy, and Liz Simon-Peter, PhD, Associate Professor, Physiology, were awarded a grant from the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy (APTA). Title of Funded Study: MicroRNAs as Key Regulators of Gene Expression in Skeletal Muscle of Children with Cerebral Palsy. (award effective date 12/1/20; 1 year)

 

Medicine

Allison C. Augustus-Wallace, PhD, MS, MNS, DEIC has been elected to the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society. Sigma Xi is an honor society for scientists and engineers founded in 1886 at Cornell University. Members are elected based on research achievements and future potential.

 

Ophthalmology

The following faculty members and residents presented virtually at the virtual American Academy of Ophthalmology in November 2020:

  • Joshua Pahng, MD and Jayne S. Weiss, MD: Gun Related Eye Injuries at a Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Lena Al-Dujaili, MD: Drive Through Eye Pressure Checks: A Novel Idea in a Time of a Global Pandemic
  • Lena Al-Dujaili, MD and Amardeep S. Dhaliwal, MD: A Comparison of Outcomes Using Ab Interno and Ab Externo Techniques of the Xen Gel Stent

Jayne S. Weiss, MD presented the H. Dwight Cavanaugh Lectureship at UT Southwestern during their Ophthalmology at the Crossroads Symposium in December 2020.

 

Orthopaedics

The Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of America awarded Dr. Scott Barnett a 2020 Young Investigator Award for his work, “Comparison of Long vs Short Leg Casts for Distal Third Tibial Shaft Fractions in Children.”

Anna Cohen-Rosenblum, MD recently presented her research at the 30th annual meeting of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS). Her talk was titled "Gender Representation in Speaking Roles at the AAHKS Annual Meeting, 2012-2019" and emphasized the importance of visibility and inclusivity in national surgical meetings to encourage diversity within the field.

 

Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

Medical student Delaney Sheehan was accepted to give a poster presentation at the NASBS 2021 Virtual Symposium. She will be presenting the abstract entitled “Granular cell tumor of the sphenoid: a unique finding in a pediatric patient with sickle cell disease and Jeavons syndrome” of which Dr. Daniel Nuss (chairman) is the senior author and Drs. Belinda Mantle (faculty) and Ashley Kraft (resident) are also authors.

 

Pediatrics

Dr. Tamara Bradford has been invited to be part of the writing group for an upcoming American Heart Association scientific statement on monitoring and treatment of pediatric cardiomyopathies.

Dr. Ashley Farge and Dr. Julie Gallois successfully applied for the Breastfeeding & Lactation Support for Medical Trainees Implementation Projecthrough the AAP. LSU Pediatrics is one of 10 programs out of 70 selected to participate. It is an 8-month learning collaborative with the nine other institutions to develop policy change at our hospital and institution to better protect breastfeeding employees and medical trainees. The hope is that if medical trainees have better personal experiences with breastfeeding, they will be more likely to better educate their patients.
