The office of CME is housed within the School of Medicine’s Office of Medical Education with direct oversight from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Lee Engel, MD, PhD. The CME office certifies eligible education activities that are aligned with the mission, goals and strategic plan for the LSU School of Medicine and LSU Health Sciences Center.
Accreditation
The Office of Continuing Medical Education complies with the standards, guidelines and ethical opinions of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the American Medical Association (AMA).
Louisiana State University School of Medicine - New Orleans (LSUSOM-NO) is accredited by the ACCME to provide AMA-PRA Category 1 Credits™ for physicians. The latest accreditation review by the ACCME was conducted in 2022 and LSU earned Accreditation with Commendation through March 31, 2028.
The CME office provides high-quality, evidence-based lifelong learning for physicians to support their efforts to improve competence in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice. The principal goal of this office is to positively impact the practice of healthcare and, ultimately, patient outcomes by implementing CME courses that are relevant to the citizens of the State of Louisiana. Additionally, the CME office provides physicians with educational opportunities to maintain clinical competency, professional standards and appropriate implementation of medical advances by blending modern technology and hands-on learning experience in a patient-centered, quality-focused and safety-oriented environment. The CME office collaborates with city, state, and regional public and private organizations to develop effective educational programs.
