LSU CME certified courses eligible for MATE Act:

DEA New Requirement

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released  materials  in March 2023 related to the new  Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act . The Act requires new or renewing DEA licensees, as of June 27, 2023, to have completed a total of at least eight hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders and the appropriate treatment of pain.

What does this mean for LSU New Orleans physicians?

To renew your DEA license after June 27, 2023, physicians will need to provide evidence of completing the one-time education requirement of 8 hours of accredited substance use disorder training.  There are nearly 2 million DEA licensees nationally and all will need to demonstrate completing this education requirement.

You may be exempt from these requirements if any of the following apply to you:

The following groups of practitioners are deemed to have satisfied this training:

• All practitioners that are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry from the American Board of Medical Specialties, the American Board of Addiction Medicine, or the American Osteopathic Association.
• All practitioners that graduated in good standing from a medical (allopathic or osteopathic), dental, physician assistant, or advanced practice nursing school in the United States within five years of June 27, 2023, and successfully completed a comprehensive curriculum that included at least eight hours of training on: Treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of a substance use disorder; or Safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, brief intervention, and referral for appropriate treatment of patients with or at risk of developing opioid and other substance use disorders. 

LSU School of Medicine graduates (2019-current) have met these requirements.  The LSU UME Office has confirmed the curriculum for LSU  students included at least 8 hours of appropriate training.

• Past DATA-Waived trainings count towards a DEA registrant’s 8-hour training requirement.

You may have earned credit for these activities already. 

The 8 hours of 'approved' content is specific to areas of prevention, recoginition and care of people with substance use disorders including those with concurrent pain and/or psychiatric and medical co-morbidities.

If you have completed your 3 hours of Controlled Danger Substance/Opioid training to renew your Louisiana license or medical permit, you have earned 3 of the required 8 hours. 

If you attended LSU New Orleans certified CME activities that meet the content requirements (listed above), these activities will also count towards your 8 hours of credit. To make an individual request for a review of your transcript, please email CME@lsuhsc.edu with the subject line "MATE Act Audit Request" with the name/date/conference you attended at LSU School of Medicine that you think qualifies for the MATE Act education.

Where can you get additional training to meet the requirement?

One option is to take courses listed at the top of this page and follow the instructions for participation to ensure you receive credit.

Any provider from the list below can offer education that meets this requirement.  You should verify with the education provider that the course content is eligible. LSU CME courses will clearly indicate their eligibility.  LSU CME does not need your transcript. This information will need to be available for the DEA when your renew/apply for your license.

• The American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or any organizations accredited by the AOA to provide continuing medical education
• The American Dental Association (ADA)
• The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS)
• The American Psychiatric Association (APA)
• The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)
• The American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA)
• The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
• Any other organization accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (AACCME) (LSU School of Medicine CME is an ACCME accredited provider)  or the Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CCEPR), whether directly or through an organization accredited by a State medical society that is recognized by the ACCME or CCEPR
• Any other organization approved or accredited by the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, the ACCME, or the CCEPR
