Miele to Serve as Senior Associate Dean for Research
Lucio Miele, MD, PhD has been named Senior Associate Dean for Research, effective March 1. Dr. Miele joined the faculty in 2014 and is currently Assistant Dean for Translational Research, Department Head of Genetics, the Cancer Crusaders Professor of Genetics, and Director of the Biomedical Informatics Key Component, LACaTS Consortium. He received his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Naples, Italy with dissertation work conducted at the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, Germany.
He spent the next eight years as Visiting Fellow, Adjunct Scientist, and Visiting Associate in the Section on Developmental Genetics, Human Genetics Branch, NICHD, NIH. Subsequently, he joined the FDA as a tenure-track Principal Investigator and became Acting Chief of the FDA Laboratory of Cell Biology prior to joining the faculty of Loyola University of Chicago as Assistant Professor. While there, he worked his way up the ranks to Professor of Pathology and Pharmacology and Associate Cancer Center Director for Translational Science.
Prior to joining the LSU School of Medicine, he was Director of the Cancer Institute and Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology with tenure at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He has published 270 papers and several other publications, including, but not limited to, commentaries and book reviews, and a book on Notch genes in cancer.
In this new part-time position, Dr. Miele will advise the Dean about opportunities and strategies to expand the research enterprise at the LSUHSC School of Medicine. In particular, he will play a key role in strategic planning and development of initiatives to achieve institutional research objectives and improve our research ranking. In this role, he will work with all external stakeholders (including the School of Graduate Studies and our clinical partners) to facilitate and grow research opportunities. An important aspect of his work will be a collaboration with Dr. Frank Smart, Interim Vice President for Research at UMC and Associate Dean for Innovation/Investigation, and Dr. Shou-Ching Tang, Associate Dean for Translational Research and Director of the LSU Phase 1 Clinical Trials Unit, to expand clinical trials and data science with our clinical partners. He will oversee the Office of Research and Core Laboratories and will also work with the Dean’s Office to establish effective data monitoring to track the school’s progress in achieving research goals.
Working with other associate deans, department heads, and center directors, he will continue to identify and disseminate research opportunities from the NIH and other state, national and international funding agencies, encourage faculty participation in research, and expand faculty development programs for success in research. In addition, he will continue to serve as Head of the Department of Genetics.
