LSU Health Sciences Center Promotes Appreciation of Diversity
>Interim Chancellor Dr. Steven Nelson and University Registrar and Special Advisor for Diversity Initiatives Alicia P. Edwards have shared information about different holidays and designations with faculty and staff through a series of emails.
In a Center-wide email, they noted, “Like threads of many colors, weights, and textures,
the diversity of Americans has been inextricably woven into the fabric of our great
nation. And the more inclusive we are, the stronger the fabric and our country.”
They noted that May was federally designated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
and Jewish American Heritage Month and the enormous contributions these Americans
have made to our nation and culture. There are many ways to learn more through exhibitions
and collections, video and audio recordings, images, and teachers' guides at https://asianpacificheritage.gov/ and https://www.jewishheritagemonth.gov/.
In a separate email, Dr. Nelson noted that June was Pride Month by presidential proclamation and a time to celebrate the LGBTQI+ community. In the email, Dr. Nelson said, “Our Health Sciences Center culture celebrates diversity and differences. No matter who you are and who you love, you belong and are valued here.”
“Our Health Sciences Center has been immeasurably enriched by our LGBTQI+ faculty,
staff and students. We are proud to support the right to live authentically and safely
with the freedom to be yourselves,” he added.
