Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Research led by Suresh Alahari, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry at LSU Health New Orleans Schools of Medicine and Graduate Studies, suggests a combination of drugs already approved by the FDA for other cancers may be effective in treating chemo-resistant triple-negative breast cancer. The results are published in Molecular Cancer, available here.

Internal Medicine

Dr. Michael Okoronkwo (EM Resident) served as the lead author for a review paper that reviewed evidence-based prospective and clinical trials that assess resilience to violent activity of Black male teenagers exposed to racial trauma using strength-based interventions. Co-authors from the DOM included: Dr. Micheala Banks (EM Resident), Dr. Josh Deblieux (EM Resident) and Dr. Pierre Detiege (Emergency Medicine)

Dr. Ashley Wennerstrom (Community and Population Medicine) was senior author on the commentary Establishing a health profession: What oncology patient navigators can learn from the National Association of Community Health Workers in Cancer and the research article Community Health Worker Activities in Public Health Programs to Prevent Violence: Coding Roles and Scope published in the American Journal of Public Health.

Dr. Michael Hagensee (Infectious Diseases) and the ANCHOR Investigators group recently published Treatment of Anal High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions to Prevent Anal Cancer in the New England Journal of Medicine.

 

Orthopaedic Surgery

Andrew G. Chapple, PhD; Amy Bronstone, PhD; Peter C. Krause, MD; and Vinod Dasa, MD, of the Department of Orthopaedics, as well as then medical students, Cody Crnkovic and Robert Quiring recently published Low Rates of Reporting Race, Ethnicity, and Socioeconomic Status in Studies Published in Top Orthopaedic Journals in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. An accompanying editorial was published as well.

Pediatrics

Dr. Nihal Godiwala's research was published in AAP this month. The article is titled Enoxaparin Thromboprophylaxis in Children Hospitalized for COVID-19: A Phase 2 Trial. Dr. Godiwala served as the Site PI for CHNOLA and LSUHSC for this multi-center, national clinical trial. The study was entitled the COVAC-TP trial; it researched anticoagulation prophylaxis in children hospitalized with COVID.

Michael Brumund and co-authors published their manuscript in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology entitled “Racial identification represents significant risk factor for healthcare disparity among patients with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia treated with tracheostomy.
