Wayne “Trey” Wortmann, MD (PGY1) received the Luis Perez Memorial Award in Ophthalmology as the graduating senior who exhibits both academic excellence and clinical growth during their 4th year curriculum.
Pathology
Zaid Khreefa, MBChB, PGY 3, was awarded third place in the Junior Member Abstracts for the CAP 22 Annual Meeting for his poster, “Liver Injury in COVID-19: Direct Evidence of Hepatic SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Associated Histopathologic Findings.” He will be recognized for this accomplishment during the 2022 Honors in Pathology Ceremony at the CAP 22 meeting, and his picture will be taken with the CAP President, Dr. Emily Volk, later this year. Additionally, he will be given an award in the amount of $750. The other contributors to this research include: Jihuan Chen, PGY 2, Gordon L. Love, MD, Chair and Head of the Pathology Department, and Luis Del Valle, MD, Associate Professor of Pathology and Medicine.
Pediatrics
Medical student Nicholas Christakis recently received the 2022 Research Experience for Graduate and Medical Students
(REGMS) award from The Endocrine Society, the major professional society for academic,
bench scientists and clinical endocrinologists in the United States. Christakis recently
completed his first year of medical school and has devoted some of his busy hours
to participating in research in the Department of Pediatrics, Endocrine Section. In
recognition of Nicholas's efforts, the award includes a $2,500 honorarium to help
with costs incurred while working on his summer research project. In addition, he
was first author for a poster presentation at the recent American Diabetes Association's
annual Scientific Sessions held in New Orleans.
