Association for Women In Science (AWIS)
AWIS Update
Carmen Canavier, Ph.D.
The Southern Louisiana Chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) conducted several activities this fall:
- Katelyn Gurley led a fundraising effort by marketing AWIS t-shirts.
- Jessica Cucinello was awarded our chapter’s fall 2019 Outstanding Young Scientist Award at our general meeting on September 11. This award provides funds for travel to a scientific meeting to present scientific results
- Crescent Combe led a team of volunteers from our chapter and coordinated three activities at the Girl Scout Believe in Girls STEM event in Baton Rouge on September 28th: dress like a scientist, squishy circuits, and pipetting colored water.
- We held a brown bag networking lunch on October 8 and a potluck fall fest luncheon on November 6, organized by Tiffany Wills.
- Diana Battaglia, Judy Crabtree, and Lisa Harrison Bernard coordinated a new award, the AWIS-SL STEM Outreach Award, to honor a graduate student or postdoc who has promoted an interest in science in girls and young women. This award was presented for the first time to Crescent Combe on Graduate Research Day on November 8.
