The UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Predoctoral Clinical/Translational Research (TL1) Program is a mentored research experience that provides the training and resources health professional students need to conduct research. The program provides 12 months of protected time for fellows to develop projects focused on reducing health disparities and/or diseases that disproportionately affect the Deep South. In addition, they complete the core curriculum, gain valuable experience writing a manuscript, and present their research at a national conference.
Logan Hilton was chosen as a 2019-2020 TL1 fellow. Taking a year out for research depends on finding good mentors, and he found a welcoming, helpful team of mentors in the comprehensive stroke center at UAB. Logan is working on two projects: one on ischemic stroke and one on hemorrhagic stroke.
“For me and my personal career goals, the TL1 program was a great fit,” said Logan.
The TL1 program eliminates most of the financial burden for the year, with a federal stipend and coverage of tuition for those wishing to also pursue a master’s degree. Logan is pursuing a one-year online MSPH in Outcomes Research. The classes are complementary to the research he is doing.
Logan feels that the biggest asset of the TL1 program is doing research, because he did not have a strong research background. A wealth of research-specific resources are offered at UAB through the CCTS.
