Dr. Michael Maristany Named Radiology Department Head  

Michael Maristany, MD has been named head of the department of radiology. Since joining the faculty in 2006 as an assistant professor of clinical radiology, Dr. Maristany has steadily risen through the academic ranks, achieving the title of professor of clinical radiology in 2024. 

He demonstrated leadership and management skills through his service in key roles including Director of 3rd and 4th Year Medical Student Education, Clinical Director of Radiology, Director of Emergency Imaging, Director of Junior Radiology, Instructor of Musculoskeletal Imaging at Harvard Medical School, and Founding Director of LSU’s teleradiology program for the Jetson Correctional Center from 2006 to 2014. He has also contributed extensively at the departmental, school, and health sciences center levels, including service on Clinical Competence, Program Evaluation, Promotions, Clinical Practice Leadership and Compensation, OB/GYN Department Head Search, and Trauma Performance Improvement Committees. At UMCNO, he has played roles in the Musculoskeletal Center for Excellence and the Trauma Center Reverification Review Committee.

Dr. Maristany has continued to hone his leadership through additional roles within the department and the American College of Radiology. He has served as Vice Chair of Clinical Operations since 2009 and is the founding Academic Director and Chief of both the Musculoskeletal Imaging and Emergency Radiology sections. An active member of numerous professional societies, he has served on the ACR Economics Committee, as an ACR Councilor, and as President of the Radiology Society of Louisiana (the state chapter of the ACR).

Dr. Maristany earned his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from LSU and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. He completed his radiology residency at LSU Health Sciences Center, followed by a fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention at Harvard Medical School. In 2015, he further broadened his leadership expertise by earning an Executive MBA from Tulane University.
