James Miller Memorial Health Fair & Blood Drive Honors Dr. Fern Tsien’s Son’s Tradition of Giving Back

James MillerThe 3rd Annual James Benjamin Miller Health Fair and Blood Drive was held at the World War II Museum on Saturday, August 3.

The event, hosted by LSU Health New Orleans and The Blood Center, honors the August 1 birthday and the legacy of community service of an exceptional young man who went missing and was presumed drowned while vacationing with his family in November 2021. Miller is the son of Dr. Fern Tsien, Assistant Dean for Medical Student Research (LSU Health-New Orleans); the late Dr. James Miller, Jr. (Tulane School of Medicine), and Chris Dvorak, MS (Instructor, Tulane School of Medicine).

Activities included live music, health screenings and the opportunity to save up to three lives by donating blood. 

Health education offerings included:

  • blood pressure and glucose screenings by the LSUHSC medical student organization Community Outreach, Rebuilding & Education (CORE)
  • information on tobacco and vaping cessation, and cancer prevention by the LSUHSC School of Public Health
  • resources for persons with disabilities by the LSUHSC Human Development Center
  • youth mentoring and mental health information from Son of a Saint
  • domestic abuse prevention and resources in Spanish from Golden Change and the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA).

The LSUHSC Health-New Orleans medical student band SIGMA (Student Interest Group for Music and the Arts) performed live during the health fair. 

All blood donors received a free t-shirt.
