Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination Online

Marlene M. Bishop, MLIS, AHIP, Head, Collection Development, LSUHSC-New Orleans Library

The library is pleased to announce that we now subscribe to Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination Online!

Bates’ Visual Guide includes over 200 streaming videos on physical examination, communication and interpersonal skills, and clinical skills. The examination series covers head-to-toe and systems-based examination techniques in the adult, older adult, infant, and child. The communication series includes contemporary topics such as empathic responses, non-stigmatizing language, LGBTQ+ patients, and interprofessional communication. The clinical skills series is designed to increase clinical reasoning skills in preparation for Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE).

These videos are based on the classic textbook, Bates’ Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking edited by Dr. Lynn S. Bickley, which the library also subscribes to via the LWW Health Library. Dr. Barbara Bates first published A Guide to Physical Examination in 1974. Dr. Bates was a pioneering female physician who championed interdisciplinary health care and was a key figure in the advancement of the profession of the nurse practitioner.1 Dr. Bickley took over editorship in the 1990s and continues to oversee publication of both the textbook and videos.
