Internal Medicine

Dr. Sancia Bredy (EM Resident) has been selected as the UMC Resident of the Quarter.

Pathology

Zaid KhreefaDr. Zaid Khreefa, PGY3, was selected as ‘Third Place’ in the Junior Member Abstract Submissions for the CAP22 Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Dr. Khreefa was recognized during the 2022 Honors in Pathology ceremony at the CAP 22 meeting, and his picture was taken with CAP President, Dr. Emily Volk.

Physiology

Post-doc Sydney Vita, PhD, was awarded the 1L40AA030413- 01/Loan Repayment Program through NIH/NIAAA for “Alcohol Exposure Exacerbates Inflammation and Anxiety-like Behavior Induced by Repeated Mild TBI During Adolescence". 


Radiology

The department held its first Bootcamp for residents and fellows on Saturday, September 24. Alex Fairchild, MD, Interventional Radiology Residency PD and Matt Givens, PD, Interventional Radiology VA Site Director led the event. Mignonne Morrell, MD, Diagnostic Radiology Program Director; Doug Casey, MD, Neuroradiology Program Director; Michael Maristany, MD, MSK Program Director; and Bahri Ustunsoz, MD, Interventional Radiology Vice Chair of Operations all helped plan the event. Ben Dorton, MD, OBGYN, Ochsner Medical Center, led the Suturing Skills portion of the Boot Camp. 

In addition to suturing skills, the day included fluoro skills and ultrasound. The afternoon portion included industry demonstrations and practice. The department expressed appreciation for industry partners’ attendance and sponsorship of the event. Industry partners in attendance included Terumo, Boston Scientific, Inari, Neuwave, Medtronic and Stryker. Fuji also provided mobile ultrasound machines for the morning portion of the event. The response for this event has been so positive the department will hold another Boot Camp on Saturday, March 11, 2023. 

Going forward this will be an educational event, welcome to all Radiology residents and fellows, which will be held twice during every academic year. Department Chair Dr. Bok was thanked for his continued support and dedication to education and to the faculty and staff who helped organize the event to ensure its success.
