Visiting Professors

The Cohn-Rives Surgical Society and the LSU Department of Surgery are honored to host Dr. B. Todd Heniford as our 56th Annual Visiting Professor.

Dr. Heniford completed his undergraduate degree and played football at Clemson University.  After attending the Medical University of South Carolina, he completed his surgical residency and Research Fellowship at the University of Louisville and a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He has been on the faculty of the Cleveland Clinic and the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., where he serves as a Professor of Surgery and directs Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery and the Carolinas Hernia Center. 

 

Dr. Heniford is the author of over 440 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and editor of three books.  He and the research fellows he directs have been the recipient of 67 regional, national and international research awards, including a 4-time recipient of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons Research Project of the Year Award and 13 Americas Hernia Society Research Awards. He is a multi-time winner of research awards from the American College of Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, and the European Hernia Society. 

 

He has developed successful medical apps, each of which have been downloaded in more than 140 countries and has several international patents to his credit.  Dr. Heniford was the 2014 recipient of the MedStar Georgetown University Lifetime Achievement Award in Surgery, received the American Hernia Society Nyhus-Wantz Career Achievement Award, and has been named “Medical Innovator of the Year” from the Business Journal.  He is a past-President of the American Hernia Society.  Five of Dr. Heniford's previous trainees have become President of the Americas Hernia Society.
