Internal Medicine

Drs. Jennifer Abdalla, Brian Allen, Arash Ataei, Morgan Bryant, Joshua DeBlieux, Fernanda Correa, Tammy Do, Ronald Fenton, Pooja Goel, Christopher Hayden, Claire Holmes, Michelle Huber, Vivian Jaber, Trevia Jackson, Naseem Khorram, Elizabeth La Rosa, Kelly Maiche, Sara Maramoto, Kathleen McCabe, Amber McCormick, Hannah Mezan, Brandy Mize, Leandre Millet, Peter Pantlin, Scott Piechocki, Allison Pinner, Shree Radhakrishnan, Miriam Rauf, Syed Saad, Marian Sackey, Cody Schwartz, Imran Shuja, Dasha Lopez Vasquez have been named “Difference Makers” by their UMC patients.

A recent LCMC Resident Spotlight featured Dr. Brittany Boudreaux (Nephrology). Dr. Boudreaux was an LSU resident and Chief Resident, and is now in her first year as a Nephrology Fellow. 

Alia Abbas (IM), Elise Abdalla (IM), Lara Boudreaux (IM), Hunter Hall (IM), Chris Hayden (IM/EM), Daniel Holmes (IM), and Will Kemp (IM) volunteered to work with UME to teach physical exam skills to the first-year medical students. Dr. Katie Oakden volunteered for multiple afternoon sessions and Dr. Meredith Hall also worked with UME.


Orthopaedic Surgery

Three residents recently presented at the OREF Southeast Region Resident Research Symposium. Twelve projects were selected from institutions such as Duke, Vanderbilt, and Emery but LSU had the most selected projects and wins out of any school in attendance:

  • Scott Barnett won third Place for his presentation Comparison of Short-leg and Long-leg Casts for the Treatment of Distal Third Tibial Shaft Fractures in Children
  • Corinne Cloud tied for Presenters Choice Award for her presentation Advantages of an Orthopedic Trauma Room for Diaphyseal Femur Fractures
  • Patrik Suwak tied for Presenters Choice Award for his presentation Assessing Vertebral Body Rotation in Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery


Pathology

Congratulations to PGY3 Pathology residents who accepted fellowships for 2023!

  • Dr. Jack Harbert has accepted a Hematopathology Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.
  • Dr. Fernanda Da Silva Lameira has accepted a Forensic Pathology Fellowship at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.


Pediatrics

Third year fellow Dr. Maria G. Español, along with her mentor Dr. Maria C. Velez, were awarded a grant from the Hemophilia Foundation of America (HFA). The one-year, $7,000 grant, "Using Interactive Technology to Improve Patient Education and Transition of Care in an Underserved Population with Hemophilia" will be used to develop an interactive website for patients to increase their disease knowledge as well as to prepare for transition to the adult world.

Senior Hospital Medicine Fellow Dr. Callie Roth penned an informative blog post about GBS, geared toward early career physicians. The post, titled "Late-Onset Group B Strep Disease," can be found here.

Dr. Heather Valdin participated in the Louisiana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatric Red River Potpourri Virtual CME Conference and gave the Resident Presentation: "An Uncommon Presentation of a Common Childhood Malignancy"
