Office of Diversity and Community Engagement Hosts Florida State University's Black Women in Medicine
Geri Davis
Outreach Coordinator, ODCE
It was a true honor for the Office of Diversity & Community Engagement to host Florida State University's Black Women in Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center. FSU ranks 16th nationally in the number of African American students applying to medical school.
The FSU students toured the Learning Center and had the opportunity to listen to normal and abnormal heart/lung sounds. They also had the opportunity to participate in a patient case scenario using one of the high-fidelity patient simulators. They interviewed the patient and assessed vital signs to determine a possible diagnosis. While interviewing the patient, the patient became unresponsive and pulseless, requiring CPR and defibrillation. Once the patient was resuscitated, the debriefing process began with a discussion of diagnosis and teamwork. This experience gave them a glimpse into the healthcare management of a critically ill patient.
ODCE is grateful for the efforts of our medical students, residents and faculty who took time to provide knowledge and exposure to these talented students.
