Pediatric Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program

Research Opportunities

In addition to clinical training, fellows participate in academic activities to contribute to the fund of knowledge in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Fellows gain experience in and an appreciation for scholarly activity while fulfilling the requirements for board certification.

Examples of academic activities include clinical or basic science research, quality improvement/quality assurance, development of educational tools, or an extensive critical topical review in the order of a Cochrane Review. A fellow's academic activities are expected to culminate in a scholarly product, e.g., a first-author paper or work product.

The fellow will be matched with a research mentor or mentors, introduced to the available resources, and have protected time for research projects. By the end of fellowship, fellows should have presented their work at a national meeting and have a manuscript ready for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

The Department of Pediatrics supports fellows in their academic pursuits in several ways. The Department works with a biostatistician from the LSUHSC School of Public Health, who provides biostatistical support to fellows free of charge. The Department also sponsors a Fellowship Scholarly Academy, a week-long series exploring innovations and development in Pediatrics. Finally, fellows are able to work with Julie Gallois, MD, LSUHSC Neonatology faculty and LCMC Physician Director of Quality Improvement for Neonatology, while completing QI projects.
