Patient Care
The Section of Geriatric Medicine at LSU HSC New Orleans is a group of dedicated healthcare professionals whose mission is to address the special needs of the diverse geriatric populations of the greater New Orleans metro area. We are committed to delivering high-quality, comprehensive and cutting-edge care to the older adult in a variety of settings, and to providing innovative leadership in geriatric education, scholarship, patient advocacy and community outreach.
Conditions Treated
Depression
Older adults often suffer needlessly from untreated depression because they don't know the symptoms, or they think it's a normal part of aging. Depression is serious but treatable medical illness.
Dementia
Dementia is a condition that impairs a person’s ability to think, concentrate, and remember (cognitive function).
Frailty
A common and important geriatric syndrome characterized by age-associated declines in physiologic reserve and function across multiorgan systems, leading to increased vulnerability for adverse health outcomes.
Falls
Falls are one of the main causes of injury in people over age 65. Falling can be very serious. It can change your overall health and quality of life.
Malnutrition
Malnutrition and unintentional weight loss contribute to progressive decline in health, reduced physical and cognitive functional status, increased utilization of health care services, premature institutionalization, and increased mortality.
Incontinence
Urinary and fecal incontinence are very common in the geriatric population, yet many patients and health care practitioners wrongly consider incontinence a normal part of aging.
