Center for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (CIPECP)
Fourth-year medical student Chrissie Alving-Trinh presented a poster at the 2021 Nexus Summit Conference (national interprofessional education and practice conference).
Internal Medicine
Ada Tusa and her mentor, Dr. Lisa Moreno-Walton, Section of Emergency Medicine, took 3rd place in the Medical Student Research Symposium. This year there were 110 presentations by 93 students.
Orthopaedic Surgery
Third-year medical student Katelynn M. Donnelly, MS presented the findings of a PubMed literature review from 2017 to 2019 at the 2021 AAHKS Annual Meeting. This review led to the conclusion that the inclusion of social determinants of health variables in randomized controlled trials is lacking in studies published in key orthopedic journals.
Pediatrics
LSU Pediatrics held their annual Pediatrics Research Day at Children's Hospital. Presentation winners included:
- Casey Norlin: Best Original Research Presentation by a Student for Nucleated Red Blood Cells as a Biomarker for Mortality in Infants and Neonates Requiring Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Cardiac Disease
- Jessica Seay: Best QI or Educational Research Presentation by a Student for Adolescent Reproductive Health Education during COVID-19: Evaluation of a Model for Virtual Reproductive Health Intervention in New Orleans
- Hannah Tonry: Best Case Presentation by a Student for Proposing chondrodysplasia punctata in association with novel FGFR3 variant c.120A>G
Physiology
Eden Gallegos was selected as the 1st place winner for the Medical Student Research Symposium and was honored with the $1500 Mitzie Hano Wittliff Research Award.
Taylor Templeton and Anna Whitehead received the Graduate Research Day Presenter Award from the LSUHSC School of Graduate Studies. (pictured, right).
Taylor Templeton received the Michael G. Levitzky, PhD Excellence in Teaching Award from the LSUHSC Department of Physiology. (pictured, left).
Taylor Templeton and Jessi Cucinello-Ragland received Trainee Professional Development Awards from the Society for Neuroscience to present virtual posters at the annual conference.
Taylor Templeton presented a virtual 8-minute talk, “Stress-induced cocaine self-administration in male and female rats” at Grad Research Day LSUHSC; a virtual poster, “Predator odor stress effects on cocaine self-administration in adult male and female Wistar rats” at the Society for Neuroscience annual conference; a virtual 15-minute talk, “Predator odor stress effects on cocaine self-administration in adult male and female Wistar rats” at the ADACE Winter Retreat; and an SGA Socratic seminar, “Disabilities in graduate school: Disparities on the path to higher education”
Jessi Cucinello-Ragland presented a talk titled “Alcohol amplifies neuroinflammatory IL-6 pathway signaling in the pre-frontal cortex” at the AIRIG meeting in November.
