Welcome to the Jeffrey Modell Center - New Orleans website. This website will inform you about the Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans (JMC).
PIDD are an extremely varied group of diseases that can affect many different functions of the immune system and that have a wide variety of clinical presentations. While the main manifestations involve recurrent, severe or unusual infections, PIDD can also predispose to inflammation, unregulated fever, autoimmunity, allergies or malignancies affecting multiple different body sites.
Affected individuals may experience these complications starting at any age, but also may have long disease-free periods. PIDD can be life-threatening and very costly to manage if left undiagnosed and, therefore, are not treated appropriately. In these frequently observed situations, the quality of life of patients can be severely impacted. Prompt diagnosis and treatment not only decreases the cost of medical care, but it also improves the quality of life of patients as well as their families.
These characteristics of PIDD define the combined mission of JMC-NOLA: to increase awareness of these diseases at all levels; to develop diagnostic capabilities, accessible to as many possible patients; and to help the establishment of centers capable of offering effective management to, and even cure, PIDD patients.
