Andrew J. McWhorter, MD to serve as Vice Chair for Development in the LSU Department of Otolaryngology

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew J. McWhorter, MD to serve as Vice Chair for Development in the LSU Department of Otolaryngology.

Dr. McWhorter joined the LSU Department of Otolaryngology in 2001, as the first fellowship-trained Laryngologist in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region. He earned a degree in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University and a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He stayed at Hopkins to complete both his general surgery internship and his residency in otolaryngology - head and neck surgery. He also completed a research elective at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. In 2001, he completed a fellowship in Laryngology and Care of the Professional Voice at the Vanderbilt Voice Center. Pursuing his longstanding interest in laryngeal cancer and conservation laryngeal surgery, Dr. McWhorter independently undertook further subspecialty training in Belgium, France, and Germany.

Early in Dr. McWhorter's LSU career, he was a key physician involved in laryngology and interdisciplinary cancer care at Charity Hospital, and at Memorial Baptist Medical Center, from 2001-2004. In 2004, Dr. McWhorter started the Our Lady of the Lake - LSU Voice Center, the first comprehensive laryngeal center in Louisiana. This Center provided, and continues to provide:

After hurricane Katrina, Dr. McWhorter played a major role in the growth of the LSU Department of Otolaryngology by helping to establish the LSU ENT Residency program at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and at Earl K. Long Hospital, and later, at the LSU Health Baton Rouge Clinics. As a high-profile accomplished academic surgeon, he is a full Professor in the LSU Otolaryngology Department, and a sought-after speaker nationally and internationally. He is the director of our ACGME-accredited LSU Laryngology Fellowship. He has been instrumental in fostering strong collaborative relationships with alumni physicians, research collaborators in other institutions, and the Department's hospital partners. 

As Vice Chair for Development, Dr. McWhorter will continue to coordinate and foster strong interdisciplinary relationships, hospital and faculty relations, and joint programs between institutions.
