1st Year
BLOCK A
Block A involves 3 months of inpatient adolescent crisis intervention. The team is led by Dr. Andrew Williams, who is also the Medical Director of Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital. As the rotation progresses, so do the duties of the residents and fellows. The final month of the rotation is an “acting attending” month where the fellow assumes all responsibilities for managing the team.
BLOCK B
Block B is similar to Block A in that it is also a 3 month inpatient psychiatry rotation. However, this month focuses on children aged 7 to 13. Dr. Jamie Hanna is the staff psychiatrist supervising daily duties. The final month of this rotation also affords the fellow the opportunity of an “acting attending” on the service.
BLOCK C
Block C involves 3 months of inpatient with Dr. Cody Roi. Residents focus on the psychosocial aspects/milieu aspects of the cases including art/music therapy, psychological testing, group therapy, family therapy, meals, and transportation. Case formulation and therapeutic interventions are also highlighted during this rotation.
BLOCK D
Block D of the first year is a combination of outpatient experiences over the course of 3 months. Residents will rotate with child neurology, the transition program and clinic, the Autism Specialty Clinic at Children's Hospital, a collaborative practice clinic in New Orleans East, and the Autism Assessment Clinic at the LSU Behavioral Sciences Center. Residents also gain experience with Telepsychiatry during this block.
Throughout the two year fellowship, fellows also participate in a continuity clinic at the LSU Behavioral Health Science Center that is primarily focused on psychotherapy, but includes psychopharmacology cases as well.
2nd Year
Consultation Experience
In the second year, fellows gain experience in consultation liaison at Children's Hospital. The rotation is staffed by Dr. Cody Roi, but allows the resident as much autonomy as desired. The psychiatry team works closely with the Emergency Medicine and inpatient teams to transition lower acuity patients to the outpatient setting. Exposure to emergency psychiatry is also part of this 12 month experience. In addition, there is an experience offered for telepsychiatry consultation to primary care clinics in rural Louisiana.
Community Mental Health Rotation
The second year of fellowship has a 12 month experience with community mental health. Children, adolescents, and young adult patients from the New Orleans community are seen at the Metropolitan Human Services Behavioral Health Clinics. These clinics have multidisciplinary teams of social workers, nurses, and psychologists and residents participate in weekly case staffings, psychology-psychiatry group supervision, and didactic presentations.
Infant Team
Built into the second year of fellowship is the Harris Infant Mental Health Fellowship. This is specialized training targeted for the Birth to 6 year old age group of patients. The Harris Fellowship involves receiving training and didactics in Child Parent Psychotherapy, development, parenting, feeding, and many other issues pertinent to this population. Group supervision of the second year fellows is led by world renowned expert in infant mental health- Dr. Joy Osofsky.
Schools, Forensics, and Substance Use Disorder Experiences
Over the course of the 12 months of second year, fellows will have three month rotational blocks for a number of unique experiences. These experiences will include providing psychiatric interventions in Orleans Parish Public Schools and St. Bernard Parish’s Rowley Alternative School. There is a Substance Use Disorders treatment experience at Odyssey House of Louisiana. There is also a Forensics and Telemedicine consultative experience with Dr. Joshua Sanderson who is trained in both Child and Adolescent and Forensic Psychiatry.
Time for electives is provided during the second year of fellowship in three month, half day blocks. Residents can elect to do research, other scholarly projects, rotation in the First Episode Psychosis Clinic, Pediatric specialty clinics, Crisis Team, Harris Court Team, or create their own unique specialty experience with the Program Director's approval.
