HOUSE OFFICER APPLICANT INFORMATION
Please apply through ERAS. When applying, please keep in mind that the Match begins
in November, Rank Order Day is in December, and Match Day is in January. Therefore,
we begin interviewing prospective candidates from September through November. Please

RESIDENT ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION
LSU School of Medicine ensures that its training programs select from eligible applicants
on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication
skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. Programs do not discriminate
with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, sexual orientation, national origin,
disability, or veteran status. House Officer Selection criteria must conform to the
guidelines of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) General
Requirements.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE:
New Years Day, Martin Luther King, Mardi Gras, Good Friday, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving
Day, and Christmas Day
ANNUAL (Vacation) LEAVE:
The vacation policy of the department is consistent with that of the LSU School of
Medicine in New Orleans. All residents receive 4 weeks annual leave and 2 weeks of
sick leave per year. Leave should be proportional to the rotation lengths in order
not to burden any particular service. No greater than 1/3 of any rotation can be missed
in order to be credited. Leave is approved on a first-come first-serve basis. Residents
must assure coverage and submit a “Request for Leave Form” with all appropriate signatures. Residents
covering in/outpatients for another resident on leave MUST sign the form for the specific
time they are covering. Leave will not be approved during the time scheduled for PRITE. In
the event that unusual circumstances affect the residency assignment, the Residency
Training Director reserves the right to cancel any approved leave and direct that
it be rescheduled.
EDUCATIONAL LEAVE:
Child Psychiatry Residents receive 5 days educational leave per academic year.
SICK LEAVE:
Amounts to 14 days per year. It is not accumulated. For unexpected sick leave, the
resident must notify the Residency Coordinator (568-2537), the rotation supervisor,
and the Chief Resident to assure coverage. Upon returning to work, the resident must
fill out a leave slip designating he/she was on sick leave and submit it to the coordinator.
MATERNITY LEAVE:
House officer paid maternity leave utilizes available vacation leave plus sick leave
for a total of up to six weeks. If the amount of maternity leave is in excess of accumulated
sick leave time, annual leave and/or leave of absence without pay will be used.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE:
Any leave beyond leave discussed in policies must be taken as leave of absence without
pay. This must be arranged through the Residency Training Director, who, with the
Chairman, will judge the appropriateness of the request.
MOONLIGHTING:
Structured moonlighting opportunities within LSU exist and are covered by the LSU
malpractice plan. PGY II and III residents may moonlight if they are American graduates
entered the program as PGY I's, and passed STEP III. Transferring PGY II's with STEP
III can moonlight. Non-American graduates must complete PGY II and III and pass Step
III prior to moonlighting.
PAGERS:
Residents are provided with a pager free of charge.
LAB COATS, MEALS, NIGHT CALL:
Availability of housing, meals, lab coats, etc. will vary among the hospital to which
House Officers are assigned. Call rooms are provided at the institutions for residents
that take in-house call.
PARKING:
Parking at LSUHSC is available to House Officers for a nominal annual fee through
the LSUHSC Parking Services (568-4884; 433 Bolivar Street, 1st Floor).
DISABILITY INSURANCE:
The opportunity to participate in-group long-term disability coverage is available
through the GME Office.
HEALTH INSURANCE:
House Officers are eligible to participate in either the student health insurance
or any of the health insurance plans that are offered to LSU Health Sciences Center
employees as well as the employee life, vision and dental insurance plans. The Cafeteria
Plan is also available which allows the house officer to have his health, life and
dental insurance deducted on a pre-tax basis. Group long term disability insurance
coverage is provided for all house officers.
MALPRACTICE INSURANCE:
Coverage is provided by state statute to house officers for clinical work done for
or on behalf of the LSU Board of Supervisors. As a State agency, we have the benefit
of legal assistance from the Office of Risk Management and the Attorney General's
Office.
LA MEDICAL LICENSE/PERMIT/INTERN CARD:
All House Officers must meet and maintain Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners
requirements for a full, unrestricted medical license, Controlled/Dangerous Substances
license, and DEA license.
