Your journey begins here!
Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, established in 1931 under the charter of Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College from 1877, initially occupied 1542 Tulane Avenue, adjacent to the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans (Charity Hospital). Over time, the campus expanded with structures such as a Residence Hall and Student Center at 1900 Perdido Street, a Medical Education Building at 1901 Perdido Street, and the Lions-LSU Clinics Building at 2020 Gravier Street. The addition of a Clinical Sciences Research Building and a comprehensive Student Learning Center, showcasing various facilities like group learning spaces and simulation labs, further enhanced the campus. The LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans encompasses not only the School of Medicine but also Schools of Allied Health, Dentistry, Graduate Studies, Nursing, and Public Health.
Adjacent to the academic campus, a new teaching hospital stands as a testament to architectural grandeur, constructed with concrete, stone, and glass. This state-of-the-art healthcare and teaching facility, situated on Canal Street, forms a medical corridor alongside a new Veterans' Administration Hospital. Designed with inspiration from New Orleans neighborhoods, the architecture blends stylized elements of local design into contemporary facades and interior spaces optimized for medical care delivery and physician training. Terraces, connected by reflective pools, pay homage to water's significance in New Orleans life. Green spaces enhance the clinical medical campus, extending from Canal Street to Tulane Avenue.
Complementing this expansion, a Cancer Center on Tulane Avenue, the LSU Foundation building, Center for Human Development building as well as the Center of Advanced Learning and Simulation complex (erected from the bedrock of University Hospital, also known as the former LSU Interim Hospital and Hotel Dieu) contribute to this continually evolving medical New Orleans landscape.
