Department of Urology

Letter From the Chairman

Dr. Christopher C. Roth

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to learn more about LSU Urology. The 2025-2026 academic year was one of growth and development for both the Department of Urology and the LSU Urology Residency Program, and I’m proud to provide an update.

The year started with the typical excitement of July: welcoming the new residents (Kierra and Clara), preparing the LSU 4th-year medical students for their residency push, and highlighting LSU Urology for visiting 4th-year medical students.  For the residency program, we were excited to partner with the New Orleans VA Hospital urology service by having our PGY-2 residents join the Tulane Urology residents on a VA rotation for the first time in program history.  The residents enjoyed learning from the VA faculty and seeing how urologic care is delivered in the VA care model.  The one-year pilot went great, and we are glad to include the VA as an added training site.

We had a great interview season and were grateful to get back to in-person interviews.  We had a fun social event on the eve of the interview day giving our guests a glimpse of New Orleans hospitality plus an inside view of the camaraderie and joy that the residents and faculty bring to the LSU Urology family.  Of the great group of candidates, we were excited to match James D’Anotoni, MD from LSU Shreveport and Kohl Killeen, MD from Ochsner-Queensland and look forward to watching them grow into excellent urologists.

This spring we successfully relaunched the UroTigers banquet as a fundraising event for the department.  It was an honor to recognize Tony Fuselier, MD for his distinguished career as a clinician and educator at both Ochsner and LSUHSC.  Many of each programs’ graduates can thank Tony for fostering a love of urology as medical students and residents.  The evening was remarkable and attendance by many alumni and friends of the department was appreciated.

On the clinical front, the adult urology practice (Drs. Lacour, Krlin, Rourke, and Darson) was successfully transitioned to a new management structure under LCMC.  The LSU urologists have partnered with the Touro urologists and adjunct faculty (Drs. Vanlangendonck, Carriere, and Ewing) to create the LSU-Touro urology practice.  This combined group has elevated patient care and training opportunities in short time.  Dr. Hossein Sharifi will be joining the adult practice early this academic year as a urologic oncologist.  His primary focus will be growing the urologic oncology services at the UMC Cancer Center while bolstering urologic oncology education for the residents.  We look forward to welcoming him to LSUHSC.

Thanks for visiting our site and please feel free to reach out regarding clinical care, residency training, or simply to say hello!

Thanks,

Chip Roth, MD
