Dr. Gilmore is a native of New Orleans. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Tulane University and subsequently attended LSU Medical School, where he earned his M.D. in 1989. From there, he did his general surgical residency at LSU, where he was chosen as outstanding surgical resident all 5 years.   He was named administrative chief resident in 1994 and also served as acting clinical director of Charity that year. Dr. Gilmore then did his Cardiothoracic Surgical training at Tulane Medical Center and after that went into private practice in New Orleans, performing cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery. He was part of a private practice group that operated in 7 different hospitals in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina, many of these hospitals were shut down. His group became affiliated with the LSU Department of Surgery, and began doing cardiac surgery at University Hospital. Dr. Gilmore subsequently joined LSU as full time faculty in 2010. He is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at LSU. He has maintained an active private practice, primarily at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center, and devotes about an equal mix of his time between private practice and University Hospital. He was recently named head of a steering committee to re-open the cardiac surgical program at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center, which was closed for 6 years after Katrina. This program was successfully launched late in 2011 and has grown ahead of all projections. Dr. Gilmore currently is performing several open heart operations monthly at this facility, in addition to maintaining a busy general vascular, general thoracic, and cardiac device implantation service at this institution. He remains heavily involved in the training of medical students and surgical residents at University Hospital.
