Section of Hematology / Oncology
Welcome to the Hematology-Oncology section. The goals of the section are to provide the highest quality clinical care for patients, to conduct basic, translational, and clinical research, and to train the next generation of Hematology/Oncology physicians. Our division of hematologist-oncologists is driven by 6 full time faculty and 3 adjunct clinical faculty. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of blood diseases and cancer. Examples of blood diseases are anemia, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease, among others. Cancer can originate from any organ, with lung, breast, prostate and colon cancer among the most common ones. A hematologist- oncologist is trained in hematology — the study of blood — and oncology — the study of cancer.
Despite important advances in treatment, cancer continues to be a major public health problem. Therefore, our faculty is dedicated not only to provide state of the art care to every patient affected with cancer, but also to develop and discover new lifesaving treatments for people affected by this disease. We are an important part of the Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center, a multidisciplinary organization whose researchers and clinicians are dedicated to furthering research on the pathogenesis, prevention, treatment, and eventual eradication of cancer. Our full time clinical faculty members focuses on a specific area of cancer research and treatment. Individual patient care is provided in close collaboration with specialists from other LSU specialists such as surgery, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, nutrition, nursing, physical and occupational therapy. We provide care at the University Medical Center of New Orleans and the LSU Health Care Network clinics located in New Orleans at 3700 St. Charles Avenue.
We have an ACGME-accredited Hematology and Oncology fellowship program. Our section has a rich history and has trained many of the preeminent Hematologists and Oncologists in the state of Louisiana.
