High School Healthcare Careers Lunch and Learn sessions Grades 9-12 

The Office Community Engagement and Health Equity Programs in partnership with Youth force Nola and Junior Achievement have created quarterly Lunch and Learn sessions with area high schools for students in grades 9-12 to engage with healthcare professionals about career opportunities in medicine. 


Tiger Stripes Afterschool Tutoring Program 

An afterschool program for 6-8 grade students at select partner schools who have expressed interest in having medical school students serve as tutors to provide homework assistance, eighth grade LEAP exam preparation, sharpen math and science test-taking skills, and discuss healthcare awareness through living a healthy lifestyle. 


Career Awareness Days

Middle and high school students are brought to LSU Health Sciences Center for a full-day and given faculty overviews of medicine, nursing, denistry, allied health, veterinary medicine,a nd pharmacy , followed by lunch with community physician and interactive tours of labortories givenby basic scientists.


Summer Science

This is a 5-week program for high school students who come to LSUHSC from around the state to experience from around the state to experience an academically enriching environment and participate in educational and motivational activities.  Students are exposed to biomedical research and have hands-on experience in medicine, nursing, dentistry, allied health and other health fields.  Please use this link to apply LSU- Community Engagement High School Summer Science Program (google.com)


STEM NOLA Medicine Fellows 

In collaboration with the STEM NOLA Organization LSU School of Medicine Office of Community Engagement and Health Equity Programs Host grades 9-12 students on LSUHSC campus each semester for 4 hours on a Saturday to expose students to educational and motivational activities. Students participate in hands-on activities in our robotic simulation labs, and are presented  with opportunities to engage in biomedical research. 


Tiger Scholars Undergraduate (Pre-Med) Academic Enrichment Program;

Tiger Scholars is a free, five-week, non-residential, academic enrichment program for up to 20 pre-medical, undergraduate juniors and seniors. The scholars participate in mini-courses in biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, genetics and public health. Additionally, the program includes workshops focused on leadership development, clinical experiences, cultural competency, financial literacy, and preparation for entrance exams to professional schools, such as the MCAT and GRE.  Please use this link to apply: https://form.jotform.com/242676409471160

Application process dates: Friday, November 1, 2024 through Monday, March 31, 2025

  1. Current attendance at a Louisiana undergraduate institution or LA resident who attends an out-of-state undergraduate institution 
  2. GPA of 3.0
  3. Academic classification, junior or senior
  4. Has earned academic credits in organic chemistry and physics

Required Documents:

  1. Copy of Driver's License/U.S. Government-issued identification card

  2. Copy of Social Secuirity card

  3. Copy of current immunization records

  4. Two to three recommendations from current professors, two must be from a current science and/or math professor

  5. Personal statement communicating how this particular program will play an important role in pursuing medical.

NIH NINDS & NEI BP-ENDURE @ LSUHSC-NO, "Health Equity in Neuroscience" Program

ENDURE undergraduate training programs will support a range of activities to increase student interest and involvement in the neurosciences, including research experiences, core and advanced neuroscience courses, seminars, and journal clubs.

The goal is to provide such individuals with training at the undergraduate level, thereby preparing students to enter and successfully complete neuroscience Ph.D. programs.  ENDURE will provide this undergraduate training through partnerships between research-intensive institutions and institutions with a substantial enrollment of neuroscience majors from diverse groups.  This includes individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; individuals with disabilities; and individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
