Mission
The Aesculapian Society (AS) was founded in 1963 to function as a liaison between
students and faculty of the LSUHSC New Orleans School of Medicine. It is comprised
of peer-elected students, with each class represented by twenty of its members. The
mission of the AS is to promote the amicable exchange of opinion between the student
body and faculty, with a view to the consistent betterment of the educational, medical
and scientific standards of the School of Medicine. In addition, the AS endeavors
to aid in any way possible the various classes, faculty and other organizations of
the School of Medicine.
Each year, the Aesculapian Society evaluates many of the core clerkships and courses
in the medical school curriculum. AS officers develop course-specific surveys which
are distributed to all students taking each clerkship/course. After allowing students
to anonymously complete the surveys, AS Representatives carefully analyze all responses
and author a report for review by the Clerkship/Course Director, the AS Course Evaluation
Coordinator, AS Faculty Advisors, the Basic/Clinical Science Curriculum Directors,
the Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, and the Dean of the School of Medicine. In
the past such course reviews have brought about much positive change in the curriculum.
