Bio
Dr. Balakrishnan joined Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – New Orleans in September 2023 as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pathology. He also serves as a surgical pathologist and gynecologic pathologist at University Medical Center – New Orleans. As the GYN pathologist, he provides consultations to other pathologists on complex GYN cases and functions as the laboratory liaison to clinicians and the GYN service at UMCNO. In addition to his clinical duties, he supervises residents, fellows and other healthcare professionals in the area of Pathology. Dr. Balakrishnan is a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the College of American Pathologists.

Research
Dr. Balakrishnan’s research focuses on gynecologic pathology, with particular interest in the relationship between tumor morphology, immunophenotype, and molecular alterations. His work is grounded in questions that arise from routine diagnostic practice, especially in areas where morphologic findings and ancillary testing may not fully align.
His goal is to bridge microscopic observation and tumor biology, using each to inform the other. Through this approach, Dr. Balakrishnan seeks to refine diagnostic interpretation, contribute to evolving classification systems, and identify practical biomarkers and histologic features that may have clinical relevance.
