Bio
Dr. Amma Agyemang is a Gynecologic Oncologist with LSU Health Sciences Center’s Department
of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She was born in Los Angeles, CA and raised in Accra,
Ghana. She received a B.S. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the State University
of New York at Albany and a MD, Ph.D. in immunology from Harvard university. While
at Harvard medical school, she was passionate about healthcare in underserved communities.
She developed health education programs for teens, coordinated annual health fairs
at community health centers, volunteered in a homeless women’s shelter and conducted
health screenings in a mobile health clinic. After graduating from medical school,
she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
where she conducted translational research on regulation of the immune system during
autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Dr. Agyemang completed her residency in
Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston Medical Center where she solidified her interest
in the prevention and eradication of gynecological cancers. She conducted research
on the early detection of precancerous anal and cervical lesions in women living with
HIV (WLHIV) and contributed to the development of an algorithm for screening in this
population. In addition, she investigated and developed protocol for enhanced recovery
after surgery (ERAS) in gynecologic surgery in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department
at Boston Medical Center. After residency, she completed a T32 postdoctoral research
fellowship and a clinical fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive
Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. In fellowship, her research involved basic science
and translational research into immunotherapeutic strategies for ovarian cancer. In
addition, she investigated immune cell trafficking within the ovarian tumor microenvironment
in a first in human clinical trial.
Dr. Agyemang is excited continue to build on these experiences at LSU New Orleans.
Her current research is focused broadly on the shared cell signaling networks implicated
in inflammation and malignancy, translational research and clinical trials involving
immunotherapy and gynecologic malignancies. She loves to spend time with family and
friends, and enjoys cooking, yoga and running.
