Dr. Fern Tsien Named Assistant Dean for Medical Student Research

We are pleased to appoint Dr. Fern Tsien as Assistant Dean for Medical Student Research.  She replaces Dr. Paula Gregory to work with the Offices of Student Affairs, Research, Diversity and Community Engagement, and Undergraduate Medical Education to enhance research opportunities for students as well as the faculty.  She will coordinate student research internships, seek funding for student research, mentor faculty to develop training grant proposals, work to expand pipeline programs and oversee the School of Medicine Honors Program.

Dr. Tsien received her PhD in Human Genetics from Tulane University.  She joined the faculty at LSUHSC in 2003 as an Instructor, and was promoted to Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor with tenure.  Throughout her tenure at LSU, she has taught extensively in the graduate and medical schools, she has developed courses and she has mentored numerous students at all levels of education.  She has a history of success in providing funding for research opportunities, and she has current funding from both NIH and NSF to provide research experience and training to high school students, undergraduate students, and graduate students.  Additionally, many of these funded programs have a goal to increase diversity among our scientists and clinicians.

We are grateful for her past service to LSUHSC and we are excited that she has agreed to this leadership position.  Her interests in research, teaching, mentorship, faculty development, and improving diversity make her very well suited for this position.  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Tsien.
