Dr. Richard DiCarlo is Dean of the LSUHSC School of Medicine, and a Professor of Medicine. After graduating magna cum laude from Haverford College with a degree in sociology and anthropology, Dr. DiCarlo moved to New Orleans and began his medical training. He graduated from LSU School of Medicine in 1987 and was elected to AOA. He completed a residency in internal medicine, served as chief resident, and completed a fellowship in infectious diseases all at LSU, and he joined the faculty in 1993. He served as clinical director of the City of New Orleans STD Clinic for 5 years, and his research interests included vaccination against HIV and STDs, and the epidemiology of genital ulcer disease. Dr. DiCarlo was a course director for over 20 years, and he has won numerous teaching awards. He served as Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education for 14 years and has overseen two major curriculum renewals. His interests included integrating the teaching and assessment of clinical skills and clinical problem solving into the pre-clerkship curriculum and integrating population medicine and public health into medical student education. Dr. DiCarlo played a major role in the school's recovery following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. With expertise and years of experience in medical education, he was the faculty lead on the school's LCME accreditation self-study in 2008-09 and worked in this capacity again in 2016-17. He has also served on numerous LCME site visits of other schools, both as a team member and team secretary. In 2016, he was appointed as Senior Associate Dean of Faculty and Institutional Affairs. In this capacity, Dr. DiCarlo served the school in the areas of faculty recruitment, mentoring and advancement, leadership development, and strategic planning. He remained active in the teaching of medical students, and in the supervision of residents on the internal medicine hospitalist service. In 2021 he was appointed Interim Dean of the School of Medicine, and in 2024 he became Dean. Dr. DiCarlo oversees all educational, clinical, and research programs of the school. The 2024 School of Medicine Strategic Plan charted the school’s course for the next five years. Dr. DiCarlo is especially interested in 1) revising the faculty incentive plan and funds flow models with our clinical partners, 2) growing the scope of our clinical practice, 3) developing innovative educational programs in the recently opened Center for Advanced Learning and Simulation (CALS) building, and expanding the school’s basic, translational, and clinical research enterprise.
