Dr. Prasad received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of California, Riverside. Following this, they attended the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten, and then earned their Medical Doctorate from the University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine. Driven by a passion for public health and epidemiology, Dr. Prasad pursued a Master’s in Public Health at Vanderbilt University. She completed her pediatric hematology oncology fellowship at Vanderbilt University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Prasad has focused on the long-term health outcomes of pediatric and adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors. These individuals often face a myriad of health challenges, including chronic conditions, differences in quality of life, social development, and fertility issues. Dr. Prasad’s extensive academic training and research experience have provided a robust background in multiple biological disciplines, particularly in the pathophysiology of cancer and survivorship care.
As a pediatric hematology/oncology fellow at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Dr. Prasad honed her expertise in epidemiology and database research, leading to a first-author publication that highlighted their dedication to survivorship research using large databases. Her commitment to this field continued to grow during her tenure as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, where she established the first and only multi-disciplinary clinic dedicated to the care of pediatric and AYA cancer survivors. This initiative led to her promotion to Associate Professor of Pediatrics in July 2017. Presently, Dr. Prasad has spearheaded the development of a shared multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional virtual tumor board, fostering collaboration on AYA patient care.
Dr. Prasad has also been involved in multiple leadership roles during her tenure at LSUHSC. She is currently the Program Director of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Fellowship – the only one in the state.
Dr. Prasad has been involved in several significant projects. She served as a co-investigator in a multi-center study titled “Distress in the Pediatric Oncology Setting: Intervention Versus Natural Adaptation,” which began on January 1, 2020, and is ongoing. This study evaluates the impact of an animatronic duck in reducing distress among pediatric cancer patients. Additionally, as the principal investigator for the St. Baldrick’s Infrastructure Grant since January 1, 2022, Dr. Prasad has utilized grant funding to hire a clinical research coordinator to open more clinical trials for pediatric and AYA patients at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. Furthermore, she is the principal investigator for the Alliance Pilot Grant, which began on January 1, 2022, aiming to improve Oncofertility care and referrals through the implementation of a risk stratification system for AYA patients at NCORP-MU.
Dr. Prasad's dedication to improving the care and outcomes of pediatric and AYA cancer survivors is evident through her extensive research, innovative clinical initiatives, and commitment to advancing the field of survivorship care.
