Dr. Kayla Bronder Phelps is an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Dr. Phelps began her academic journey at Tulane University in New Orleans, where she earned both a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, graduating cum laude in 2009. Her commitment to public health was further demonstrated through her role as a Public Health Officer at St. Camilus Mission Hospital in Karungu, Kenya, where she worked from 2009 to 2010.
Following her time in Kenya, Dr. Phelps continued her education at Tulane University, where she completed both a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and a Doctor of Medicine degree between 2010 and 2015. Additionally, she undertook the CDC Experience Applied Epidemiology Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, focusing on chronic disease prevention and health promotion.
Dr. Phelps's postgraduate training included a Pediatric Residency at the University of Michigan from 2015 to 2018, where she also served as Chief Resident from 2018 to 2019. She then completed a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the University of Michigan.
Since August 2022, Dr. Phelps has served as an Assistant Professor at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans where she is an attending physician in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Children’s Hospital New Orleans.
Dr. Phelps is an active member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Her committee and volunteer service reflect a deep commitment to pediatric care and medical education.
In addition to her extensive teaching experience, Dr. Phelps has contributed significantly to her field through numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national conferences. Her research focuses on identifying health disparities within Pediatric Critical Care with the goal of implementing evidence-based practices to improve health equity for our most critically ill children.
