Dr. Thomas Kimball currently serves as the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology and Nelson
K. Ordway Professor of Pediatrics at the Department of Pediatrics, Louisiana State
University Health New Orleans. A tenured Professor of Pediatrics, he is also the Co-Director
of the Heart Center at the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.
His academic journey began at Stanford University, where he earned a BS with distinction
and honors in June 1978. He then pursued his medical degree at New York University,
graduating with an MD in June 1982. Following this, he completed his internship in
Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles in June 1983 and continued there
for his residency, which he completed in June 1985. He further specialized in Pediatric
Cardiology during his post-doctoral fellowships at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, finishing in June 1988.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kimball has held various academic, professional, and research
appointments. For over 30 years he served as an attending physician at Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital. In May 2019, he joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics
at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. His administrative duties include
his roles as Chief of Pediatric Cardiology for the LSU Department of Pediatrics and
Co-Director of the Heart Center and Service Line Chief of Cardiology for the Children’s
Hospital of New Orleans
Dr. Kimball has delivered over 200 invited lectures and presentations, demonstrating
his expertise and commitment to knowledge sharing. He has trained over 50 fellows
at the University of Cincinnati and 10 fellows at the Louisiana State University Health
Sciences Center – New Orleans. His prolific writing includes over 200 peer-reviewed
publications and 10 book chapters.
Throughout his career, he has secured over 10 million dollars in grant funding for
various research initiatives. His dedication to advancing the field of pediatric cardiology
through clinical, educational, and research contributions, as well as his leadership
in training the next generation of pediatric cardiologists, has significantly impacted
both the academic and medical communities.
