Dr. Carrie Morgan Henderson is a distinguished Professor of Pediatrics specializing in Critical Care Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, LA. Her career spans over two decades, marked by significant contributions to pediatric healthcare, particularly in the field of chronic critical illness and decision-making around home ventilation for children.
After completing her Doctor of Medicine with high distinction at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Dr. Henderson pursued training in pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University, followed by a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. In addition, Dr. Henderson completed the Clinical Medical Ethics Program at the University of Chicago’s MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.
Dr. Henderson’s academic journey began at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) and Children’s of Mississippi, where she served as Associate and Assistant Professor respectively, before assuming her current position at LSUHSC. Her expertise in pediatric critical care and medical ethics has been honed through both research and clinical practice. She obtained her certification as a Healthcare Ethics Consultant from the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. With this experience, Dr. Henderson served on hospital ethics committees at UMMC and now at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans and was selected to the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Bioethics.
She has been a principal investigator and co-investigator on multiple research grants, including projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Palliative Care Research Center. Her collaborative research efforts with colleagues from Johns Hopkins University, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and other institutions have resulted in numerous publications, addressing critical topics such as decision-making in pediatric home ventilation and ethical considerations in pediatric critical care.
Dr. Henderson is committed to education and mentorship, shaping future leaders in pediatrics and bioethics. She is actively involved in professional organizations, serving on committees and contributing to policy development in healthcare ethics. Her dedication to compassionate patient care and innovative research continues to drive advancements in pediatric critical care medicine, making a profound impact on the lives of children and families facing complex medical challenges.
