Dr. Diego Aviles is a distinguished Professor of Pediatrics at the Department of Pediatrics,
LSU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in New Orleans. He holds the prestigious
Alan Robson, MD Endowed Professorship in Pediatrics.
Dr. Aviles embarked on his medical career at the University of Puerto Rico, where
he completed his pre-medical sciences from July 1980 to June 1983, followed by earning
his Doctor in Medicine degree from July 1983 to June 1987. He then undertook an internship
in Pediatrics at the University Pediatric Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from
July 1987 to June 1988, and continued there for his residency in Pediatrics, which
he completed in June 1990. Pursuing further specialization, he completed a post-doctoral
fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at Georgetown University’s Children’s Medical Center
in Washington, DC, from July 1990 to June 1993.
In his professional journey, Dr. Aviles has held several significant academic, professional,
and research appointments. Since July 2011, he has been serving as the Division Chief
of Pediatric Nephrology at LSU Health Sciences Center. He has also been the Medical
Director of the Children’s Hospital Dialysis Unit since July 2005. His dedication
to education and mentorship is evident through his role as the Alan Robson Professor
of Clinical Pediatrics, a position he has held since July 2009. Additionally, he directed
the Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program from July 2009 to June 2015.
From March 2014 to December 2019, Dr. Aviles served as the Medical Director of the
Children’s Hospital Kidney Transplant Program, and he resumed this role in June 2022.
He has been the Medical Director of the Children’s Hospital Apheresis Unit since April
2015 and the Service Line Chief of Pediatric Nephrology since April 2020.
His research endeavors have been supported by 15 grants, totaling over 1.3 million
dollars in funding. He has an impressive body of scholarly work, with over 50 publications
and seven book chapters, and has been invited to deliver more than 20 presentations
at professional gatherings.
Dr. Aviles's contributions to pediatric nephrology extend beyond clinical and academic
settings. His leadership roles at the Children’s Hospital, particularly in the Dialysis
Unit, Kidney Transplant Program, and Apheresis Unit, highlight his commitment to improving
patient care and advancing medical practice. His extensive experience, dedication
to mentorship, and significant research contributions have established him as a respected
figure in the field of pediatric nephrology.
