Bio
Dr Nsuami is an Associate Professor of Research in the Department of Medicine. He completed undergraduate studies in biomedical sciences and earned a MD degree at Kinshasa University in Zaire in 1986. From 1987 to 1992, he worked in Zaire as a physician-researcher for a Zairian-American-Belgian HIV/AIDS research program, following a cohort of children born to HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected mothers from birth to age 5. During these early years of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Dr Nsuami was among the pioneers who investigated vertical transmission of HIV and contributed to better characterize pediatric HIV/AIDS in Africa. He co-authored 10 research articles on HIV/AIDS in children and their mothers and was acknowledged in many others for his contributions. In 1992, he was among investigators who determined current methods of calculating the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
After international sponsors ended HIV/AIDS research in Zaire, Dr Nsuami enrolled in and earned a MPH degree in Epidemiology at Tulane School of Public Health in New Orleans in 1993. In 1995, he joined LSUMC-New Orleans when it was launching a citywide chlamydia screening in local public high schools. Dr Nsuami was instrumental in gaining acceptance of this initiative in local schools, which then ran for ten consecutive years until 2005. He created and maintain a dataset that is unique in the field, from which 20 research articles have been published, 12 of which he has written.
With his accumulated experience in every research stage -study design, protocol development, research ethics, data collection, database development, statistical analysis, data interpretation and reporting- Dr Nsuami has co-authored an additional 16 research articles in collaboration with researchers at LSUHSC-NO and at other institutions in the US and around the world. He is currently serving as Guest Editor of a special issue on “School-Based STD Screening” for the journal Biology..
