Bio
Dr. Lopez is the Richard Vial Professor of Medical Education and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Medicine at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He is also Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Records at the LSU School of Medicine. A native of New Orleans, Dr. Lopez received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, and his MD from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and a graduate of the Honors Program. Afterwards, he returned to Stanford University where he was an intern, resident and chief resident in Internal Medicine and a fellow in Infectious Diseases. In 1998, he returned home to LSU-New Orleans to join the faculty in the Department of Medicine.
He has written more than 160 journal articles and chapters in textbooks, and is a co-editor of the McGraw-Hill textbook entitled, Infectious Diseases: Emergency Department Diagnosis & Management. He is a contributing author to chapters in major textbooks including Cecil Textbook of Medicine and UpToDate.He has been a member of the American College of Physicians committee for the Infectious Diseases editions of MKSAP (Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program) 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19, and was a member of the national Internal Medicine In-Training Examination Question Writing Committee. A Master of the American College of Physicians and a Louisiana ACP Chapter Laureate Award recipient, Dr. Lopez has also served as Governor of the Louisiana ACP Chapter.
Dr. Lopez has made numerous presentations to national and international audiences. He has received multiple teaching and mentoring recognitions including the Dr. Alan Copping Award for Excellence in Teaching, the LSU Health Sciences Center’s highest teaching award. The senior students of the LSU School of Medicine have elected him multiple times to be the faculty member who confers their Oath of Hippocrates at the annual Pre-Commencement Ceremony. Dr. Lopez is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.
