Bio
Benjamin Springgate M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P. is a Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Section of Community and Population Medicine, and Vice-Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine at the LSU School of Medicine-New Orleans. He is a Professor of Health Policy and Systems Management at LSU School of Public Health, and Director of the Center for Healthcare Value and Equity at LSU Health Sciences Center-New Orleans. Dr. Springgate received his M.D. from the Tulane University School of Medicine, his M.P.H from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and is a graduate of the UCLA-Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program. Dr. Springgate, an internist and health services researcher, has led and contributed to a number of studies seeking to improve understanding of resilience in communities affected by climate change and disasters, well as on the use of Community-Partnered Participatory Research to address disparities in access to and outcomes of services for depression. Dr. Springgate serves as the Principal Investigator of the Community Resilience Learning Collaborative and Research Network (C-LEARN), a National Academies of Sciences-funded community-academic collaborative focused on testing approaches to build community resilience in the face of climate change and disasters. Dr. Springgate co-founded and leads the LSU Integrated Health Clinic at University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana's only academic primary care center focused on care of patients with opioid use disorder. Dr. Springgate's work has been funded by the National Academies of Sciences Gulf Research Program, NIH, PCORI, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Red Cross, the Louisiana Department of Health, and others. Dr. Springgate serves as medical advisor and Chief Health Officer of the New Orleans Public Schools. Dr. Springgate directs the LSU Health MD/MPH Dual Degree Program, training the next generation of physician leaders in public health.
