Bio
Dr. Stephen R. Ramee is a proud Army Brat and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from Vanderbilt University in 1974 and an MS in Physiology and Biophysics from Georgetown in 1976. He then graduated AOA from George Washington University Medical School in 1980. Dr. Ramee joined the US Army in 1977 and completed his residency and fellowship training at Letterman Army Medical Center from 1980 thru 1985. He had several positions in the Army finishing as the Director of the Catheterization Laboratory at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1988. Dr. Ramee came to the Ochsner Clinic in 1988 with his three colleagues from Walter Reed: Drs. Chris White, Herman Price, and Tyrone Collins to help rebuild the Cardiology Department at Ochsner.
Dr. Ramee served at Ochsner as the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and the Section Head of Interventional Cardiology from 1992 to 2010. Since 2010, Dr. Ramee has been the Medical Director of the Gayle and Tom Benson Heart Valve Center at Ochsner Medical Center. He has collaborated with his colleagues in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiac Anesthesia, Imaging Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiology, and Electrophysiology and Heart Transplantation to create a world class Heart Valve Center and growing Adult Congenital Heart Center. The Heart Valve Center has been awarded the highest rankings for TAVR by the US News and World Reports and has developed growing and excellent Mitral and Tricuspid Valve Repair and Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion programs. These are collaborative efforts involving RN’s, MD’s, and APP’s from all of the aforementioned cardiac subspecialties. World-class cardiac valve surgery and catheter based valve repair and replacement are our passion.
Dr. Ramee has been Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, and Interventional Vascular Medicine. He has authored hundreds of manuscripts and scientific papers in the field of interventional cardiology. His major research interests have centered on research and development of interventional cardiology devices and techniques. He has participated in over 200 clinical trials and hundreds of live demonstration angioplasty courses. He has been a leader in the field of coronary and non-coronary revascularization and trans-catheter therapy for heart valve
disorders. Dr. Ramee has performed revascularization and heart valve procedures on every continent except Antarctica. He and his colleagues have performed many firsts in their field over his career. Dr. Ramee still maintains an active clinical referral practice for complex coronary intervention and non-surgical treatment of valvular heart disease.
He is a former Chair of the Benson Heart Valve Center at Ochsner, Board of Trust Member for the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Intervention (SCAI) and Master (MSCAI). He served as Co-Program Director of Peripheral Angioplasty and All That Jazz for 20 years. He is the past-Chair of the Interventional Council of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). He is also past Governor of the Louisiana ACC, founding Program Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program at Ochsner.
Dr. Ramee’s goal in joining LCMC and LSU Health Science Center is to develop a system-wide Structural Heart and Heart Valve Center for all patients in the Gulf South. With the collaboration of our physicians, administrators, philanthropy, and patients, this heart valve center will be a long lasting beacon of hope to all patients in our region with complex heart valve disease and provide a research, training, and referral center for decades to come for physicians in the Gulf South.
