Clinical Skills Integration (CSI) - Skills Lab (SL) Policies

Attendance:

1. Attendance is MANDATORY for all CSI Skills Labs sessions. Each Skills Lab consists of three components (all components are mandatory)
   • Web-based Pretest – Pretest must be completed prior to the CSI-SL Review ZOOM Lecture.  If not, student will receive a 10 point reduction in their pretest score. 
   • Pretest Review ZOOM Lecture - consists of a review of the pretest followed by discussion and question/answer. If student fails to participate in Zoom lecture, they will receive a 10 point reduction in the Skills Lab professional score. To receive full credit for the Zoom lecture, student must be signed in for greater than 70% of the Zoom review total session time.
   • Skills Lab session - scheduled. A completed pretest is required for student to attend (Pretest is the ticket into Skills Lab session)
2. Students required to wear a facial covering while participating in the Skills Lab session.
3. Students who report late to the Skills Lab session will be unable to participate, thus requiring the student to attend another scheduled session or complete a research paper.
4. Students who are unable to attend their scheduled Skills Lab session due to prior commitment, need to make arrangements to switch lab sessions with a classmate in another group.  An email must be sent to the SL Course Director to confirm all changes. 
5. Students who fail to attend their scheduled Skills Lab session for a family emergency or for medical reasons must email the SL Course Director as soon as possible and request to attend another session.
6. Due to scheduling difficulties, not all Skills Lab sessions have make-up sessions.  If no make-up session is available or can be scheduled, students who are late or miss their scheduled/make-up session will be required to complete a research paper. If a student misses a session, they must have an excuse that is acceptable to Student Affairs.  Student Affairs will determine if it is an excused or unexcused absence. 
   • If Student Affairs decides it is an excused absence, the student will be given an assignment by the SL course director.  This will be a research paper on a topic related to the missed lab session topic. If the assignment is not turned in by the due date, the student will be given a Physicianship Enhancement Form (PEF).  
   • If Student Affairs decides it is an unexcused absence, then the student will receive a PEF if they do not attend the session.

CSI - SL Grading Policy

CSI-101 and 102 Pre/Practical Test : (50% of total grade)

CSI 101 - Skills Lab Pre-Test in the FALL session: Pass or Fail. Students must obtain a score > 70% on all pretests to pass the course. Students will have two attempts to take pretest. There are 2 pretests over the duration of the FALL semester- all questions are of equal value. 

CSI 102 - Skills Lab Pre/Practical Tests count for 10% of the CSI 102 (SPRING) final grade. Students must obtain a score > 70% on all pretest/group practical-tests. There is 1 pretest and 1 group practical quiz over the duration of the SPRING semester- all questions are of equal value. 

• When calculating the final grade for the CSI-Skills Lab 101 or 102: the total number of correct pre and/or practical test questions divided by the total number of available questions. A student who receives a grade of Fail on both pretests/practical quiz will receive a grade of Fail for the CSI – Skills Lab course, thus causing a Failure of CSI 101 or 102. 

CSI-SL 201 and 202 Pre/Practical Test: (50% of total grade)

CSI 201 - SL Pre/Practical test in the FALL session: Pass or Fail.  Students must obtain a score > 70% on all pretests/group practical to pass the course. Students will have two attempts to take pretests.  There are 3 pretests and 1 group practical quiz over the duration of the FALL semester- all questions are of equal value.

CSI-202 – SL Pre/Practical test in the SPRING: Pass or Fail.  Students must obtain a score > 70% on all pretests/practical to pass the course. Students will have two attempts to take pretest. There are 4 pretests and 1 group practical quizz over the duration of the SPRING semester - all questions are of equal value.

When calculating the final grade for the CSI-Skills Lab 201 or 202: the total number of correct pre and/or practical test questions divided by the total number of available questions. A student who receives a grade of Fail on both pretests will receive a grade of Fail for the CSI – Skills Lab course, thus causing a Failure of CSI 201 or 202. 

CSI – SL 101/102 and 201/202 Professionalism Score : (50% of total grade)

Each student starts with a Professionalism Score totaling 100 points.  Below is a list of possible deductions for a student displaying poor professionalism. 

1. Missed scheduled Skills Lab session without prior notification for a Family/Medical emergency - 10 points deduction per event. 
2. Late arrival to scheduled Skills Lab session - student required to attend another group session - 5 points deduction per event.
3. Failure to complete a make-up assignment (research paper) - fail Clinical Skills Integration (101/102 or 201/202) course.

Missed Scheduled/Make-up CSI 101/102 or 201/202 - Skills Lab

1. Students who fail to attend an assigned Skills Lab session will be required to write a research paper on a related topic.  The paper must be five to seven typed (doubled space) pages in length and have at least three (3) references cited.  The paper must be completed by the date assigned and submitted to the Skills Lab Course Director.  
2. Further unexcused absences from the Skills Lab sessions are grounds to fail the Skills Lab course, thus causing a Failure of CSI 101/102 or 201/202.

BLS (AHA Healthcare Provider/HeartCode) CSI-Skills Lab 

The policy for current BLS (AHA Healthcare Provider) cardholder: 

1. If BLS (AHA Healthcare Provider) card will expire before December 1^st of sophomore year, the student is required to attend BLS training in the CSI-SL 101 (CSI-SL: BLS). This policy will insure that medical students have a current BLS card throughout their medical education.
2. If BLS (AHA Healthcare Provider) card will expire after December 1^st of sophomore year, the student is not required to attend CSI-SL 101: BLS. However, the student is required to provide a copy of their BLS card to the Course Director. 
3. All the above information must be given to the CSI-SL Course Director prior to the student’s assigned CSI-SL 101 BLS session. If a student does not comply with the above course requirements, they will be required to attend CSI-SL 101: BSL or another AHA Healthcare Provider / HeartCode (BLS) course. 
4. All medical students are responsible for maintaining a current BLS (AHA Healthcare Provider) card throughout their medical education.
5. Students who are BLS Instructors may be asked to assist teaching their classmates in lieu of attending CSI-SL 101: BLS. 

Communications: Email

The CSI-SL Course Director will communicate with students via email.  This includes notification of schedule changes, make-up labs or other course requirements.

LSU Health New Orleans – Needle Stick Injury

1. Wash and clean injury/flush mucous membranes immediately.
2. Assess risk
   1. Characterize exposure
   2. Evaluate exposure by medical history (see attached questionnaire)
   3. Evaluate and test exposed individuals
3. Perform Quick HIV test - this test is usually available at your nearest hospital ER. The rapid HIV test should be performed on the Source Patient.
4. Decide whether or not Prophylaxis is needed.
